Unmasking the Strong Black Woman Within

A four-week live storytelling and conversation series for Black and Brown women exploring strength, need, care, receiving and community.

2026: Honouring Our Communities

WHO HOLDS THE WOMEN WHO HOLD OUR COMMUNITIES?

SBW Workbook (Facebook Post) (4).png

Maybe you already know this experience...

You are the one others turn to, the one they can rely on.

The one who listens. The one who holds it all together and always finds a way. Keeps going.

You carry what needs to be carried and pride yourself on how much you can hold, and not drop.

Maybe you learned how to remain capable and composed even when you were struggling.

How to conceal your needs.

How to care for others without knowing how to let that same care reach you.

Maybe strength became the way you protected yourself. The way you remained useful, needed or worthy of belonging.

But what happens when you can't keep carrying?

What happens when your body stops?

When your resources run low?

When you need help that you cannot provide for yourself?

Who are you allowed to be when you cannot be the strong one?

About This Series

Unmasking the Strong Black Woman Within is a four-part live exploration of need, resource, care and what we share.

It isn't a course asking you to stop being strong, it's a space to meet the parts of you that learned strength was the price of belonging.

Together, we will explore where those expectations came from, what they have protected, what they have made possible and what it may have cost us to remain inside them.

We will speak honestly about emotional restraint, independence and caretaking, the central elements of the Strong Black Woman schema, and how they can shape our bodies, identities and relationships.

We will also honour the wisdom, resilience, creativity and cultural inheritance held within our strength.

This work is not about rejecting the women we have been or blaming the women who came before us.

It is about becoming honest enough to discern what we want to keep, what we are ready to lay down and what we no longer want future generations to inherit.

The Power of Storytelling

Each week, I will share a story from my own life and my relationship with the Strong Black Woman.

Stories of the women who taught me what strength was supposed to look like.

Stories of illness and a body that could no longer keep carrying.

Stories of losing independence, needing care and learning to receive.

Stories of shame, pride, scarcity and having to make my need visible to my community.

The story will become our way into the theme.

From there, we will pause, write, reflect and enter into conversation together.

There will be teaching woven throughout, but this is not a space where I speak at you for two hours.

This is a held, facilitated container in which your experiences, questions and stories are also part of the exploration.

You will not be expected to disclose anything you do not want to share.

You do not need to perform strength, healing or vulnerability here.

You can arrive with what is true.

HONOURING OUR COMMUNITIES

This year’s series is held through the lens of Honouring Our Communities, the 2026 Black History Month theme.

But honouring our communities does not mean romanticising them.

It means telling the truth about the people who have held us and the places where we haven't been held.

It means recognising the traditions, relationships and acts of care that have helped us survive, while also examining the expectations that have asked some of us to carry far more than others.

It means being willing to meet culture with both gratitude and discernment.

To honour community is to participate with integrity, respect and accountability.
It is to ask what we each need, what we can genuinely offer and how we might create relationships in which care can move in more than one direction.

This series asks not only how Black and Brown women have held our communities, but how our communities might learn to hold us too.

WEEK ONE: NEED

What happens when the Strong Black Woman has needs?

Get to Know Us

We will explore what we learned about asking, needing and allowing ourselves to be seen when we cannot manage alone.

We will consider the difference between having needs and being considered “needy,” the shame that can surround asking for help and what may feel at risk when we allow others to know we are struggling.

WEEK TWO: RESOURCE

What happens when we become the resource everyone depends upon?

Get to Know Us

We will explore how scarcity, poverty, survival and “making a way” have shaped our relationship with giving and receiving.

We will ask what happens when our physical, emotional, financial or spiritual resources become depleted—and whether we still feel worthy when we have less to offer.

WEEK THREE: CARE

What does it mean to be genuinely cared for?

Get to Know Us

We will explore the difference between care and caretaking, support and rescuing, love and obligation.

We will consider what allows care to feel dignified, reciprocal and safe and what happens within us when we are invited to receive without immediately repaying.

WEEK FOUR: SHARE

What are we willing to make visible, offer, receive and hold together?

Get to Know Us

We will explore what makes community something we can genuinely trust and participate in.

We will consider how we share truth, responsibility, care and resource without disappearing inside the role of giver, helper, fixer or strong one.
